Rescue of A Damsel In Distress
On Christmas Day 2022
It was not a frosty, snowy Christmas in The Philippines. Cute little reindeer were not pulling a sleigh across the pre-dawn sky. An Angel disguised as a woman in pain called me that morning in 2022 and came to visit bringing a miraculous gift.
A friend had referred her to me. At this date she was age 35, a mother of 5 lovely children, one an infant, and she couldn’t stand up straight! A visiting friend recorded it as a video with his phone.\
She posted the video on Facebook. I could not copy the video so I’m taking still shots from it, with her permission.

To protect her identity, I’ll call her Jo-Anne. Some of the Chinese, Filipino and other Southeast Asian cultures laugh or smile through adversity, but this day was no laughing matter.
Jo-Anne was really in trouble. In a photo we can see her doing her best to ignore the pain and put on a happy face; laughing to avoid embarrassment, but she is anything but happy.

Jo-Anne braces herself against the wall in an attempt to stand through her pain. She is experiencing too much pain to climb the wall,

so she’ll go back to trying to stand up from the floor.

She’s obviously in pain, climbing up by pushing on her thighs should work but she’s too painful for that.
You may never have thought of this. We all require for our spine to be aligned with the pelvis and the head so that gravity runs through the top of our head, passing the spine, through the center of the pelvis to a spot centered between our feet. She naturally wants to have this alignment.
She’s gotten her feet under her pelvis and wants the center of gravity where she can stand and balance, but she still can’t stand up straight because her low back hurts too much. (Can you imagine, all of this to start Christmas Day?)
With a hand braced on the wall she’s trying ….

Bracing on her legs she can force her way to close to standing up. This is about the best she could manage. Here it is, Christmas morning, she’s calling a friend who told her to call me and she and her husband and an infant, came to my little apartment.
The miraculous gift she brought to me was another friendship and a wonderful success story.

What If she had called an MD?
A medical doctor has no experience or training with this sort of problem, unless he/she is an orthopedic surgeon. Surgeons earn their living doing surgery. They don’t know anything about spinal adjusting and would tell you that would not help, because they want what is best for themselves. They want you to spend more than you could ever earn on spinal surgery.
The average general practitioner or internist has no idea what to do other than prescribe pain relievers and muscle relaxers which will make her sleepy and unable to work with her husband or care for her children.
True to form, they generally do not know the source that is “the cause” of much of anything unless they can point to a bacteria, virus, poison or prion. Some spinal surgeons will “manipulate” a spine while the patient is drugged. However, they never got to the cause of the problem, and consequently the misalignments with pain will return as the patient had been before the manipulation under anesthesia.
If she gets pulled into the medical system, she’ll go from doctor to doctor, X-Rays, perhaps CAT-scans, more tests, they might try to convince her she needs exploratory surgery. They will say she has a pinched nerve, which is true but the MD’s don’t know what to do to cure it. They may call it a “slipped disc.” That is anatomically impossible. Discs cannot slip. They can herniate and in that case a modern, very simple surgery can be successful, however usually taking a CAT Scan is required. and that can be quite expensive.
YEARS ago I had a patient with that sort of problem. I told her to take my note to her surgeon. I said the problem was a disc herniation between the 4th and 5th lumbar. Look for that and you can probably remove the offending gelatinous protein with a small incision and a vacuum pumped through a clear plastic tube. See what you’re doing with a fiber optic cable. He was surprised that I could tell him this in such detail. He did a CAT-Scan (a type of x-ray) found what I was talking about, and performed the surgery. That resorted the young women to her normal health again.
So….Here we were with Jo-Anne’s family. They operate a small auto and motorcycle parts supply business. If they must pay for multiple doctors and surgery, they’ll be wiped out!
I am not being overly dramatic. They could lose their home and their business over this issue. Many people in the insurance business tell us many families are one small emergency away from a total disaster. Homeless Americans these days are people who were working and got sick or hurt, lost their job and ended the story sleeping on the sidewalks!

I have made my entire living from age 27 to 50, that comes to almost 26-years curing problems like this! After I retired from practice at age 50 I did some advertising work, (a skill I know and enjoy doing) and I continued caring for friends on a Part-Time basis when they called me and requested help. During that time I was a traveling therapist from age 52 through 63, working on friends when they called me.
My first education in health-care was at the State University of New York, Stonybrook Campus. That campus houses a highly regarded medical college and they also taught anatomy and physiology. I was able to audit the anatomy and physiology courses to see if I could learn and understand it at a reasonable pace and if I would like it. I did like it and thought it did not give me any Grade Point Average, I was able to mention it when I decided to enter Chiropractic college in 1973.
I started working on patients in the clinic at Palmer College of Chiropractic beginning in 1974. I was also working on a girlfriend and then more friends came to visit at my apartment. I was during that time also taking night courses in Massage which I decided should fit well with Chiropractic techniques.
I graduated from the Chiropractic college March of 1977, got licensed in Washington State, and opened a practice in a small community seeing 18 – 21 patients per day, which worked out to approximately 5,300 patient visits per year.
I finally left practice in 2000. We’re looking at 26-years full-time working on painful patients and several more years working when called, as I still do today.
If you care about the numbers, I had started treating patients in early 1976, and as of this writing in late 2025 we total up over 49-years doing a combination of Chiropractic and Classic Massage.
All of this is done while the patient remains dressed. This photo shows the ideal clothing to wear. You should wear a common cotton t-shirt or in colder weather a sweatshirt, and sweat slacks or something like shorts or loose comfortable jeans.

There is something more I must talk about and you need to hear it.
Westerners do not accept the idea that it is bad manners for you to say “no.” If you can’t say “no” then you are forced by this mannerism rule to be a liar. Even your Bible tells you, “Let your yes be yes and your no be no.”
We’re told in several places in the Bible to be honest and truthful.
I am working on patients with a skill level most Chiropractors don’t know, never imagined, and can’t approach. I could move back to New York City and be paid more than $100 for a visit. Here, I’m earning less than $8.50. It’s not a big practice. It’s more like a hobby, and a way to be friendly and helpful and fit into the community.
I do this work because I want to be helpful. If you value my skills and our friendship, be honest with me; by this I mean….
If you make an appointment, keep the appointment. If you cannot keep the appointment, call in and say, “Something happened and I have to cancel my appointment I’ll call again later for another one.”
That’s alright with us. You were being considerate about our valuable time.
It is valuable.
It is worth $8.50 every half hour and it is worth much more in the USA. If we know you won’t come in, we can call someone else who wants a time slot and let her know, “We have an opening for you at this time and date.”
The MD’s cannot fix this. They have no experience or training in it. I don’t know ONE Massage Therapist who really understands the cause and cure of spinal problems. Most of the Physical Therapists I’ve met also don’t know how to adjust the spine. Lately I see more advertising for various forms of physical therapy machines working on a patient. Physical Therapy machines will not realign misaligned joints.
American Osteopaths may work on it successfully. I have not seen any Osteopaths in The Philippines where I live.
This is a photo of a plastic model human spine (Plastic models are used in clinics to explain what the patient wants to know.)

Massage Therapy courses in the US cost close to $15,000, and so far as I have seen, none of these therapists can so much as define what the spine is, and cannot explain its function, or name any of the parts of it, or point to the muscles attached to it and tell you what these muscles do. I have watched many massage therapists on a show on YouTube called Psyche Truth-Massage and every one of them admits they never touch the spine because they don’t know how to take care of it, and they sound a bit frightened to even try. This is their education and they paid a high price for it. AND when they begin opening a practice they have no idea where to begin a conversation, exam, and actually run a successful practice!
Meantime, 75,000 American Chiropractors go to work every day, successfully adjusting the spinal positioning of painful backs for millions of patients. Injuries are so extremely rare they might amount to 1 in 500,000. There are a few in England and Europe who came to the US for training and returned home to make Chiropractic their career.
My interest was to learn to care for patients with physical exams and without the need for x-rays. Chiropractic began in 1895 and by the 1920s there were hundreds of Chiropractors working on patients. A few then were able to buy an x-ray system. They learned to do their work with various physical exam testing methods. I searched until I found those methods and I studied and practiced them. I also listened to old 1920s lectures given by B.J. Palmer, who was the man who created “Palmer School of Chiropractic.” Today, it’s a large college with many buildings. I visited in the 1980s and needed someone to direct me to find the college book store. The place seems huge to me now.
In practice, if I was concerned about the possibility of broken bones or bone disease, I referred the patient to a local hospital to take x-ray photos. I read the report when it was delivered to me from the radiologist and orthopedic surgeon.
Working this way, I’ve reduced the cost to the patient. The patient pays the hospital a very small fee, or their health insurance pays for the exam there.
I did not charge for reading the reports. Other Chiropractors were charging for taking, and reading x-rays. My charges were lower. I might have ordered x-rays on 2 patients in every 100. The rest were simply unnecessary.
I’m distressed by the lack of understanding about simple “old fashioned” physical exams, and how to balance muscle and then adjust the spine. I finally wrote a course about the techniques I have recovered and developed. I’m looking forward to teaching this therapy before I pass off the scene.
Someone wrote; “Every time an old person dies, it’s like losing a library.” I want to leave the world with what I have learned. I’d like to leave more Back Pain Therapists as a legacy.
Jo-Anne and her husband are one of the nicest couples I’ve ever met. We averted a disaster for them and I’m thanking God for it.
Jo-Anne had a painful climb to stand but finally she was able to make phone calls, reach me, hobble into their vehicle, and come to visit.
True to a Chinese tradition in another photo she looks up to speak to someone while trying to put on a happy face and express good-natured laughter, but this is no laughing matter. She’s was in a lot of pain and it could have become a lot worse without the help she needed.

There were many photos like this, watching her try to climb the wall.
Most massage therapists would see this patient and think, “I can’t do anything for her and I don’t want to risk doing injury. I will refer her to the hospital emergency ward.
That would be a terrible mistake! The best the American medical people can do is offer more x-rays and “exploratory surgery.” They offer medications to kill pain and relax muscles.
Years ago they would have patients on their bed with a contraption stretching them as if they were on a 14th Century torture rack.
They truthfully have no training and experience in realigning spines and restoring muscle balance to patients with this sort of pain syndrome. Almost none of them know the source of these problems.
Similarly, American radiologists do not have any training about neck “whip-lash” injuries. They look for broken bones, see nothing, and say, “Oh you’re alright. Just go home and rest.” In fact, the patient is not alright, and between 6 and 18 months later he/she will probably be in terrible pain.
It takes that long for “bone spurs” (little spikes) to develop. These spikes impinge upon or stab into the opening where the nerve exits between two vertebrae. When that spike or spur is pressing into the nerve, the patient experiences pain that grows worse as time passes.
I’m sorry to say most Chiropractors have not taken an X-ray orthopedics course either. They also do not completely understand how to care for whip-lash patients. I had that study and I do know how to explain it and care for the problem.
If you know someone who was struck from behind in a car crash, tell them to get in contact with me; the sooner the better! Ideally treatment should begin 3 days after the car crash. Any treatment after then is better than none.
We natural healers know from painful observations that patients who take the medical route for back pain with surgery involved are never normal and healthy again. At best, 20% say they had a reasonably satisfactory outcome. That leaves 80% in pain for the rest of their lives! Some statistics are a bit better now than they were in 1977 but they have made very slow progress since then.
This last photo of Jo-Anne is the last half second of the story. Someone in the home was recording the video with a cell phone and stopped here.
She, her husband, and a baby arrived at my apartment and the care she needed was really rather simple.
I let her choose what to pay me. Even today I am inclined to work on a “donation” basis. The suggested donation per visit was set by Jo-Anne. She thought P500 was what most local people could afford. She thought I was worth more but told me, “If you ask for P500 you’ll have many patients.”
I decided to leave that as the suggested donation amount and I give the rest of the money concerns to God. It is always better for a man to learn to trust completely in “The Infinite.”
I’m completely serious about this. Our modern world has too much self-concern and outright greed. Landlords in major cities have thrown many people into the streets so they could collect higher rental prices. They have a heart of stone and they will face God about this one day. Of that I am completely confident.
Some people make a hero out of the rich or the big name sports or music celebrities. My heroine is Mother Teresa. She suffered and gave herself to help others and deserved to be canonized as a Saint.
So to complete the story — I worked on Jo-Anne’s back and she left standing straight and feeling 85% normal. Most of the rest of her pain was coming from swollen soft tissue around the previously misaligned joints. That swollen tissue was pressing the nerve roots.
I told her it would clear up in 2 or 3 days. I made a few other recommendations. She wrote a note back and said I was right and the pains did resolve.
The miraculous gift she brought to me was another friendship and a wonderful success story, for which I am grateful.
While they were at my apartment, Jo-Anne also told me her husband had been in a motorcycle accident three months earlier and still had pain in the upper back with difficulty about using one arm and he also had a bit of a winged-out scapula (shoulder blade.)
He also was much better after a treatment and wanted another follow-up treatment.
January 2nd, She and her husband came for a second visit and I recorded that they were both doing much better. July 2023, they visited again for a general “check up” including my combination of massage and a spinal adjustment. They’re happy to know I’m available. Their son also had an injured foot playing foot ball (soccer). I had him back to moving comfortably in 5-minutes.
