How To Make It A Business Success
Stephen Newdell
I’m continuing a thought I had written about earlier.
There’s no other place to find employment. There are few places to go, but you have a good place to GROW where you are!
This advice is for nearly every business imaginable. History through the World Wars proved that the businesses that are big today, continued working through the bad times, and they grew!
They grew because others doing similar work gave up and voluntarily went out of business. That left their customers looking for someone else doing similar work. The cafes and restaurants, car dealers and car repairmen, jewelers and watch makers, and clothiers, shoe, boot and leather purse dealers; all of those smart people kept on working. Their management knew that they were getting customers from those that dropped out of business.
- Car dealers can buy cars from car lots going out of business. They’ll have more stock selling at a better price and they will profit more.
- During World War II Honda’s little motorbike business was bombed. They repaired and continued serving customers who needed their motorcycles repaired. Years later Mr. Honda wanted to sell his cars and maybe manufacture them in the US. Many told him he could not complete with the big car makers in the US. He knew they were wrong. He produced better vehicles at a competitive price, changed the car manufacturing standards of the world and gained a huge percentage of market share.
- Some Purse makers, watch makers, and jewelers in Europe continued making luggage and accessories and they regained their lost fortunes. Today they are big names.
- People still need to eat. Find old recipes that teach you to use everything. Don’t waste anything. It becomes part of stew or soup and goes with a cheap egg sandwich. A little soup or sauce goes a long way to making something a bit ordinary sell well.
I knew kids who knew the listing of what made a Burger King burger popular from their TV Ad, and they would nearly sing it now and then. “Special Sauce” was nothing amazing but it sold a lot of sandwiches and fries.
- The point is, you can find profitable ways to manage, feed people, and feed stray dogs at your back door with scraps and throw away food items, and they will be your night guards. No one wants a fight with snarling dogs. The dog will protect your kitchen at night and costs no money.
Male dogs want to run around and mate. Females stay home to protect their den and family. They’ll stay around your doors to protect your business.
Take a dog home to protect you, your car and your family. She comes with you to work, stays in her shelter outdoors, and leaves with you at night. Others at the door get something to eat and will stay there and chase marauders away.
- Every kindness brings a good favor back. Do good. Help the living continue living and it all comes back to you with more good help when you need it.
- Don’t give up. Don’t fight with your wife defending your self pride! Just be quiet and go to work even if blowing snow is predicted. Stay there, work, even sleep there. Keep on producing and earning, running the water a little to avoid frozen pipes, and your wife will see you as a hero instead of a couch potato. Suddenly you realize; lately, she’s being kindly and pleasant again.
- Keep working somewhere because you’ll meet people who need your skills working with them, or they’ll become your customer today. Be thankful for the work and keep on working.
- Advertise with our New York City Area Shopper Magazine. I’ll go out of my way to help you with driving direction maps, good advertising writing, more photos, menus, price lists, small ads scattered around here and there for more exposure at low prices. Whatever we can do to help we will do. I can’t give labor away but I can hold prices so low the competition won’t try to compete with us.
Our magazine online is always clean, like new and good-looking, and it’s designed to be interesting and fun to read. It helps relax a mind that is a bit stressed. It helps shoppers drive less, save money, shop safely from home, find what they want, and feel that it did a good service for them.
The magazine is designed to
- offer the right message
- to the right seriously interested prospective buyers
- at just the right time for them to see/hear the message
- and it’s always there.
- and the page counter shows you that there are viewers. If you’re as smart as I think you must be you’ll keep a list of dates and page visits to know that eyes are visiting.
Ask a Chinese Restaurant manager if all of the beautiful calendars he gives away are making more sales. They always say, “I don’t know. I hope so.”
It’s much better to keep a talley and prove eyes are looking. When customers come in ask if they saw the ad in the Shopper Magazine. If they say “yes” say you can offer discounted prices on something you normally sell. This helps you know that the ad is working.
It’s important to always be seen in the magazine all year. This creates a feeling of great stability and reliability. It develops “familiarity” which leads to comfort.
Women do more than 80% of the shopping. What do women want most?
They want stability, especially if they’re raising children.
They buy from people they like who make them feel liked, appreciated, comfortable, and welcomed. They are comforted by familiarity.
Remember this, because it will help you survive and prosper even while the economy is looking distressing.
I sincerely expect this will help you all of your life. It did for my grandfather and my father and for me, even during a short time when I was jobless, homeless, and feeling hopeless.
Some of the best and biggest names in the advertising world spent a few nights sleeping on park benches and many days selling, and thinking about what they should have done or said to sell more. Today everyone in the ad business who is serious about making a career of it, knows their names.
Keep on going. Make promises you can deliver. Do not make promises you cannot keep! Honest people develop good reputations and that good reputation goes a long way to developing your personal prosperity.
Nowadays with the Internet, if you’re nasty to one customer he can tell his story to 10,000. We have to be careful and we must be honest and do the best quality work we can.
By keeping this advice and doing your work, the economy will improve, your personal life will improve, and we will still be making our honest living doing useful, helpful, honest work.
